History Taking matters into her own hands, the original Hard Candy Girl custom-mixed her own polish, creating the perfect baby blue shade, SKY. With the ensuing flood of compliments on the unusual polish, Dineh’s mission was clear. Perhaps it was the disturbing lack of girliness in the current grunge trend; whatever the reason, it was apparent that the world was ready to get sweet on Hard Candy. The infamous polish was initially sold in L.A.’s most exclusive boutiques, the very first being prestigious retailer, Fred Segal. It was there that, upon arrival of the four sample bottles: SKY, SUNSHINE (yellow), MINT (pastel green), and VIOLET (lavender), a young shopper caused a scene, demanding that her mother purchase the samples on the spot. The inevitable result was Hard Candy’s first order for 200 bottles. The fresh new beauty brand was off to a great start. Add one Alicia Silverstone gushing about her Hard Candy manicure while gabbing with David Letterman about her debut in Clueless, and you have an unbeatable recipe for sweet success.
Today, a decade after starting a nail rage with the launch of its playful polish collection, the Hard Candy line now features over 150 beauty staples, all supremely designed and delectably packaged.
